Rug Size Guide
The right rug brings a room together. Use these room-by-room suggestions to find a size that suits your space.
For area rugs, leave approximately two feet of exposed floor between the rug and walls, adjusting for smaller rooms.
Living Room
Choose a rug large enough for at least the front legs of your sofa and chairs to rest on it. Common sizes are 8′ × 10′ or 9′ × 12′. Try 6′ × 9′ for smaller seating areas or 10′ × 14′ and larger for spacious arrangements.
Dining Room
Allow 24–30 inches of rug beyond every side of the table so chairs stay on the rug when pulled out. Measure your table with any extensions in place. Typical starting sizes are 8′ × 10′ for six seats, 9′ × 12′ for eight seats, and 10′ × 14′ for ten seats.
Bedroom
Place the rug beneath the lower two-thirds of the bed, extending beyond both sides and the foot.

-

Entryway
Try a 3′ × 5′ or 4′ × 6′ rug, depending on your space. Make sure the door clears the rug when opening.
Hallway
Choose a runner that leaves approximately 4–6 inches of floor visible on each side. Keep the runner clear of door swings.
Kitchen
A 2′ × 3′ rug works well at the sink. Use a runner along a longer counter or between an island and cabinets.
Before You Order
Mark the rug’s outline with painter’s tape to check its size against your furniture, walking paths, and door clearance.
This guide offers general sizing suggestions. The best rug size will depend on your room dimensions, furniture placement, and personal preference. Always measure your space before ordering.
